When a watermark is added to any communication signal in the prior art applications, hardware such as sensors are incorporated into the receiver units, or software changes are made to the receiver units to detect these watermarks. This gives rise to a cost increase.
Furthermore, in the mentioned position estimation systems, methods based on motion parameters of radio waves are usually used. The user's position is estimated, for example, by calculating the angle of incidence or amplitude of the signal. The level of complexity increases in these types of methods, since one must find the values of the mentioned parameters.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The object of the present invention is to provide a method for position estimation and data transmission in a wireless system, where positions of the points of interest (POIs) are determined by the watermarks incorporated in the transmitter light output without to require any additional hardware, and various applications are offered to the user according to the particular mode.
Another purpose of the invention is to provide a method for location estimation and data transmission, where various news such as campaign information are communicated to the subscribers who are in the vicinity of the place of interest.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a method for location estimation and data transmission, which makes it possible to monitor customer profiles of the subscribers at the points of interest in order to improve the wireless services provided by the service provider.
Detailed Description of the Invention The method of position estimation and data transfer that has been accomplished to achieve the object of the present invention is illustrated in the accompanying figure, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic block diagram of the method of position estimation and data transfer.
The parts of the clock have each been given a reference numeral, the designations refer to the following: 1. Transmitter 2. Receiver 10 15 20 25 30 3. Server 4. Wireless network 5. Subscriber station At least one transmitter (1), at least one subscriber station ( 5) which comprises a receiver (2) and at least one server (3) is used in the inventive method for location estimation and data transmission. Communication between the server (3) and the receiver (2) is provided by means of a wireless network (4).
The transmitter (1) is located at the POIs. Points of interest are the places or areas where location estimation will be performed. Places of interest are, for example, museums, restaurant chains, hospitals, cinemas or locations with special functions that enable audio transmission, such as the proximity to a TV or radio. For a place or area to be an interesting place, it is sufficient to have a device such as a loudspeaker at that place or area that can emit sound.
Places of interest can thus be fixed or mobile.
The receiver (2) is a sensor capable of detecting sound, and it is located in a mobile subscriber station (5). The mobile subscriber station (5) is a mobile telephone or other device comprising a sound sensor such as a microphone, a watermark decoder, a control unit and a monitor.
The server (3) includes various application information such as the campaigns and services offered by the service provider as well as the subscriber's user information of the service provider.
In the present invention, the location information for the points of interest (POIs) is integrated as a watermark in an audio signal to be emitted from a loudspeaker or similar sound source which emits at the point of interest (POI).
The subscriber stations (5) in turn estimate the location of the POIs by decoding the watermarks using audio watermark decoders.
When the user wishes to find the location of the POI that he or she is near and / or the location of the other POIs, he or she starts the data reception process by turning on the receiver (2) and requesting the location-based the service information provided by the transmitter (1).
In one embodiment of the invention, the data receiving process is triggered automatically, and when the transmitter (1) starts transmitting, the receiver (2) automatically detects the transmitted data. If the data reception process starts automatically, the user can switch off the receiver (2) if he or she so wishes. When the transmitter (1) in another embodiment of the invention starts transmitting, the receiver (2) automatically detects the data being transmitted, but a warning is given on the user screen asking for user confirmation to display said information. When a warning is given on the screen of the user's mobile subscriber station (5) informing that information is received regarding the place of interest (POI), the data reception process starts if the user accepts the transmitted information.
The receiver (2) receives the sound comprising the watermark message and sends it to the control unit in the subscriber station (5). In the control unit, the watermark message is decoded using the decoder and the position information is sorted. Then the subscriber (5) sends this information to the wireless network (4).
The location information is transmitted to the server (3) by the wireless access network (4).
The server (3) stores the said location information. The mentioned location information can then be used in location determination services with an instant position regarding the points of interest (POIs), such as services for social networking, mapping or navigation. In one embodiment, the server (3) keeps statistics of the times when the users are present at the same location within a specified period of time, in accordance with the location information received from the subscriber stations (5), whereby one can detect social tendencies and behaviors of the users.
The service provider organizes campaigns in accordance with the user behaviors.
The application can also be used in applications with location estimation, such as home or area security or disaster relief efforts. For example, when a mobile transmitter (1) starts transmitting after a disaster, the receivers (2) in the vicinity of the transmitter (1) can automatically detect the transmitted data. If this data is transmitted to the server (3), information related to the number of recipients affected by the disaster and the locations of these recipients is acquired.
When the location information is transmitted to the server (3) in a further embodiment of the invention, the server (3) sends various information to the subscriber station (5) associated with the location information. The information is transmitted from the server (3) and transmitted to the subscriber station (5) via the wireless network (4). When the location information is delivered to the server (3), the current campaign information, provided by the service provider and relating to the location at which the user is located or about which user is trying to find information, can be transmitted to the user's subscriber station (5). Alternatively, the user may inform the server (3) of its location and request information from the server (3) associated with the restaurant or cinema, mall, etc. in the vicinity of his or her location, and the server (3) transmits this information to the subscriber station (5).
In another embodiment of the invention, the point of interest (POI) is the immediate area around a television set or radio. In this embodiment, when the location information of the POI has been obtained, the time information is also transmitted to the server (3) when the location information of the POI is transmitted. In this type of application, time information, in addition to the location information, is also incorporated into the audio signal as a watermark. In this embodiment, a media content sample such as music, video is sent to the subscriber station (5) which gives the user options such as purchasing the entire media content sent to him or using it for evaluation purposes. In this embodiment, in addition to the ability to receive the transmitted signals in real time, it is also possible to record the audio segment which includes the position and sound information. In this type of case, the information associated with the number of times that said segment (for example a video or audio file) is listened to or played can be registered in the server (3). Thereby, areas of interest of the subscriber are discovered.
The resolution of the position estimate in the inventory is directly proportional to the number of transmitters to be used in the system. * Due to this property, the resolution can be improved or reduced in accordance with the requirements of the system and application.
With the present invention, it is not necessary to determine and process the parameter information of the sound wave as it was performed in the prior art, and information can be accessed by means of only a single watermark decoder.
The inventive method for position estimation and data transmission makes it possible to embed position and various information emitted from any audio transmitting device and then use this information in different areas. The mobile station used in the invention is a device that accompanies the user and includes a sound receiver (2). No additional hardware is incorporated in the mobile station or transmitter (1) to perform position estimation and send information to the user. This has resulted in a cost reduction when it comes to creating location tracking systems.
It is possible to develop a plethora of embodiments of the inventive method for location estimation and data transfer. The invention may not be limited to the examples described herein and is substantially in accordance with the claims.

Method for position estimation and data transmission, in which at least one transmitter (1) is used, at least one subscriber station (5) comprising a receiver (2), a watermark decoder, a control unit and an image sensor, and at least one server ( 3), and the communication between the server (3) and the receiver (2) is effected by means of a wireless network (4), and comprising the steps of integrating the location information of the points of interest (POIs) as a watermark in an audio signal to be emitted from a speaker or similar source for sound transmission at the point of interest (POI), the receiver (2) receives the sound comprising the sound comprising the watermark message and transmits it to the control unit of the subscriber station (5), the watermark message is decoded in the control unit by means of the watermark decoder and the location information if the points of interest (POIs) are sorted, the subscriber station (5) sends the location information to the wireless network (4), location information transmitted to the server (3) through the wireless network (4), the server (3) transmits various information to the subscriber station (5) associated with the location information; and characterized by the steps of the server (3) storing the location information, the server (3) keeps statistics on the number of times the users are present at the same location within a particular time period, in accordance with the location information transmitted thereto, whereby the social tendencies and behaviors of the users detected, the service provider organizes campaigns in accordance with the user behaviors.

Method for location estimation and data transfer according to claim 1, wherein, when the user wishes to get find the location of the point of interest (POI) that he or she is in the vicinity of and / or the position of the other points of interest (POI), he or she initiates the data reception process by switching on the receiver (2) and requesting the location-based service information provided by the transmitter (1).
